Atomic Clock
Rubidium oscillators are a type of atomic clock and are the most accurate time standards known that can be mounted on a PCB. Rubidium oscillators are known for providing optimal stability over both short and longer timescales, as well as exhibiting minimal ageing when compared to other typical oscillators. They serve as independent frequency standards for laboratories and high-precision scientific research test apparatus, as well as a backup for telecommunications, broadcast technology, and global positioning systems (GPS) in the event of primary synchronization source failures.
The exceptional accuracy of Rubidium Oscillators is attributed to the combination of both an OCXO and a physics package within the unit. The physics package operates on the principle of transitions in the energy levels of Rubidium gas, ensuring a continuous check on the frequency of the quartz oscillator over an extended timespan.
Short-term stability is provided by an OCXO locked to the rubidium physics package. The rubidium gas, stimulated by microwave RF at a particular frequency, provides further long-term frequency stability qualities.
Rubidium oscillators are highly sought after for critical applications such as telecommunication infrastructure, TV broadcasting, and global navigation satellite systems (GPS). They serve as a reliable timing reference in mobile radio stations, test and inspection equipment, as well as navigation systems in financial, utility, security, and communication timing applications.
