F is for Frequency

Frequency (Tolerance vs Stability)

In today's A to Z, we explore the difference between frequency tolerance and stability.

Tolerance of a crystal refers to the allowable frequency deviation when measured at the inflection point. For AT-cut crystals, this is typically measured at 25°C.

Stability, on the other hand, refers to the frequency variation over a defined operating temperature range.

Although these crystal characteristics differ, they are equally crucial when assessing the accuracy of the timing function for your devices and applications.

O is for Overtone

Overtone

Did you know... Crystals can vibrate in different modes? The fundamental frequency is usually achievable up to 50 MHz. But, as higher frequencies are required for different applications, these are easier to achieve using ‘overtone’ frequencies.

Overtone mode for a crystal is simply where it vibrates at odd multiples of its fundamental frequency. Learn more about overtone mode in our App Note on Specifying Crystals.

Or, you can find out whether an IQD part operates in fundamental or overtone mode in our Parametric Search.

P is for Pullability

Pullability

Pullability of VCXOs are an essential feature that reflects the change in the output frequency when the input voltage is varied. Greater pullability figures give a greater tuneable range, but smaller pullability figures will allow greater control.
